GETTING TO ULTRA-TRAIL DRAKENSBERG
Where is UTD?
Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg is based at Sani Pass Premier Resort, in the Kwazulu-Natal province of South Africa. The closest towns to Sani Pass Hotel are Himeville and Underberg.
The closest airport is King Shaka International airport in Durban. It’s 255km from the airport to Sani Pass Premier resort, and about a 3,5 hour drive.
The entire road from the airport to the race village at the hotel is tarred and in good condition. The first 124km is on the N3, a national highway which is in great condition.
The next 130km is on a smaller national road. This is a beautiful drive through the Natal midlands as you approach the Drakensberg. This road tends to have some potholes and road works. So it’s not advised to drive this road at night, unless you are very familiar with the route.
For the GCU62 runners and supporters: the road between Sani Pass Premier Resort and Bushmans Neck Hotel is about 40% tarred, and 60% gravel road. Set aside 60 - 90mins for this drive. The gravel road conditions are rough, but entirely accessible with any small rental car.
For the SDR32 runners and supporters: the road between Sani Pass Premier Resort and the Start at Castleburn Farm is 100% tarred and the trip will take approximately 50-60mins
King Shaka International airport has a large number of car rental companies that you can choose from. Since UTD 2020 falls on a long-weekend, it’s highly advisable to book your rental car in advance.
Runcation offers runners staying at the Sani Pass Hotel Race Base transfers from King Shaka International, and back. Submit your requirements here (or email email@example.com).
