Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg 160 (UTD160) is 163km (102 Miles) in length and starts in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho where it traverses 73km of high altitude terrain before joining into the UTD100 course at the top of Sani Pass and following the next 90km to Bushman’s Nek.
The race will start at Sani Mountain Lodge (The Highest Pub in Africa), at 12h00 on Friday 26th April, and head into Lesotho on a circuitous route that is almost entirely above 3000m (9842ft) in altitude. A number of high points will be passed with the highlight of these being Thabana Ntlenyana at 3482m (11424ft). Thabana Ntlenyana is the highest peak in Southern Africa and the highest point south of Kilimanjaro and tagging it will be a significant milestone for many of the runners. After 73km the runners will return to the Lesotho Border Post at the top of Sani Pass and, after entering South Africa, they then plunge down the Sani Pass and into the trail which traverses the Twelve Apostles for 6km before the long and fast 19km descent down the Khanti Ridge to Premier Resort Sani Pass at 102km.
From the Resort the course climbs the beautiful Gxalingenwa Gorge and skirts the front of Ndlovini before dropping down into Cobham Nature Reserve, which at 115km. From Cobham it is a 20km leg that includes the long climb up to Crane Tarn and the descent into Castleburn Farm at the 135km mark. From Castleburn the runners ascend the face of Garden Castle before topping out at Black Eagle Pass and turning toward the iconic Rhino Peak.
The final Checkpoint of UTD160 is in the shadow of Rhino Peak at Swiman Hut with 150km in the bank. From Swiman it is a 13km last effort to the finish at Bushman’s Nek Hotel which includes the final big climb from the Mzimude River to the top of Langalibalele Pass and the 5km swoop down to the Hotel.
UTD160 runners will require passport to enter Lesotho and runners from some countries will also require a visa. This is a simple process and can be completed online at http://evisalesotho.com. Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg will supply the necessary letter of invitation where required.
