SDR 30

Sundowner Run (SDR) is 30km in length with 1200m of vertical climb and occupies an altitude window between 1600m and 2150m.

The Race Start is at Castleburn Farm at 15h30 on Saturday afternoon. SDR provides runners with the unusual experience of running into the sunset and eventually the dark to provide an opportunity for many to experience night running for the first time. SDR participants will also have the potentially inspiring situation of being out on the course with many of the UTD runners as they complete the final third of their day.

Athletes will climb the face of Garden Castle and summit Black Eagle Pass as the sun drops behind the iconic Rhino Peak before approaching halfway at Swiman Hut as darkness falls. From Swiman Hut the field will have 15km of night running down to the Mzimude and up Langalibalele Pass to the finish at Bushman’s Nek Hotel. SDR is aimed at teams of two runners although there will be limited availability for solo runners.

SDR has an official cut-off of 8 hours at midnight at Bushman’s Nek Hotel.

Entries Open @ 09h00 on 1st November 2016 and close at midnight 31st March 2017 or when the event is full whichever comes first.

The event is pre-entry only and no late entries will be allowed after 31st March 2017.

Compulsory Kit

Due to the variable and potentially dangerous weather experienced in the Drakensberg the Compulsory Kit list is taken very seriously by the Organisers. Compulsory Kit will be checked and photographed at REGISTRATION (not at the race start) as well as the Finish. A missing item will result in a 30 min time penalty and more than one missing item will result in disqualification.

As part of our partnership with The North Face we are very pleased to offer a limited range of apparel that will assist you in fulfilling your Compulsory Kit requirements. This apparel is heavily discounted and available on a first come first serve basis to all athletes registered in one of the 4 UTD events. To view the range and place orders please e-mail Spurgeon at

Orders need to be place by end of day on Friday 14th April.
