Giant’s Cup Uncut (GCU62) is 62km in length with 2400m of vertical climb and occupies an altitude window between 1600m and 2150m. The Race Start is at the Premier Resort Sani Pass at 06h00 on Saturday morning, 27th April.
The GCU62 is a non-stop traverse of the entire Giant’s Cup Hiking Trail which is certified as a 5 Day hike. The event is entirely on mountain trail and provides the runners with a uniquely pure trail running experience. From the Hotel the course climbs the beautiful Gxalingenwa Gorge and skirts the front of Ndlovini before dropping down into Cobham Nature Reserve at the 12km mark.
From Cobham it is a 20km leg that includes the long climb up to Crane Tarn and the descent into Castleburn Farm and the halfway point of GCU62. From Castleburn the runners ascend the face of Garden Castle before topping out at Black Eagle Pass and turning toward the iconic Rhino Peak.
The final Checkpoint/Aid Station of GCU62 is in the shadow of Rhino Peak at Swiman Hut with 15km left to the finish. From Swiman it is a last effort to Bushman’s Nek Hotel which includes the final big climb from the Mzimude River to the top of Langalibalele Pass and the 5km swoop down to the Hotel.
The following cut-off times will be enforced on the GCU62 course.
Castleburn – 7 hours at 13h00 on Saturday afternoon.
Finish – 13 hours at 19h00 on Saturday evening.
The event is pre-entry only and no late entries will be allowed after 29th March 2019.
Due to the variable and potentially dangerous weather experienced in the Drakensberg the Compulsory Kit list is taken very seriously by the Organisers. Compulsory Kit will be checked and photographed at REGISTRATION (not at the race start) as well as the Finish. A missing item will result in a 30 min time penalty and more than one missing item will result in disqualification.
Conservation is a subject close to the heart of Running Man Adventures and as a result we take our environmental footprint very seriously. In light of this Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg will be a ‘cup free’ event and all runners will be required to carry their own cup or bottle for use on the trail and at the water tables.
Entries close on 29th March 2019 and no late entries will be allowed after this date.
