GCU 62

Giant’s Cup Uncut (GCU) is 62km in length with 2400m of vertical climb and occupies an altitude window between 1600m and 2150m. The Race Start is at the Sani Pass Hotel at 06h30 on Saturday morning.

The GCU is a non-stop traverse of the entire Giant’s Cup Hiking Trail which is certified as a 5 Day hike. The event is entirely on mountain trail and provides the runners with a uniquely pure trail running experience. From the Hotel the course climbs the beautiful Gxalingenwa Gorge and skirts the front of Ndlovini before dropping down into Cobham Nature Reserve at the 12km mark.

From Cobham it is a 20km leg that includes the long climb up to Crane Tarn and the descent into Castleburn Farm and the halfway point of GCU. From Castleburn the runners ascend the face of Garden Castle before topping out at Black Eagle Pass and turning toward the iconic Rhino Peak.

The final Checkpoint/Aid Station of GCU is in the shadow of Rhino Peak at Swiman Hut with 15km left to the finish. From Swiman it is a last effort to Bushman’s Nek Hotel which includes the final big climb from the Mzimude River to the top of Langalibalele Pass and the 5km swoop down to the Hotel.

GCU has an official cut-off of 15 hours at 21:30 on Saturday evening.

Entries Open on 1st November 2016 and close at midnight 31st March 2017 or when the event is full whichever comes first.

The event is pre-entry only and no late entries will be allowed after 31st March 2017.

Compulsory Kit

Due to the variable and potentially dangerous weather experienced in the Drakensberg the Compulsory Kit list is taken very seriously by the Organisers. Compulsory Kit will be checked and photographed at REGISTRATION (not at the race start) as well as the Finish. A missing item will result in a 30 min time penalty and more than one missing item will result in disqualification.

As part of our partnership with The North Face we are very pleased to offer a limited range of apparel that will assist you in fulfilling your Compulsory Kit requirements. This apparel is heavily discounted and available on a first come first serve basis to all athletes registered in one of the 4 UTD events. To view the range and place orders please e-mail Spurgeon at spurgeon@runningmanadventures.co.za

Orders need to be place by end of day on Friday 14th April.
