Drakensberg Rockjumper

The Drakensberg Rockjumper (DRJ) is a two day trail run with distances of approximately 15km each day. It is an ideal event for those just getting into trail running or runners keen on the shorter distances.

Falling under the Ultra-Trail® Drakensberg (UTD) Festival umbrella it slots in seamlessly with the other UTD events on offer and benefits from the pristine and magnificent trails that UTD provides.

Based at the Sani Pass Hotel and with a clover leaf format runners will be blown away by one of the most idyllic short course layouts on the Trail Running calendar. Predominantly in the Maloti Drakensberg Park runners will touch on sections of the legendary Giant’s Cup, Gxalingenwa and Khanti Ridge trails and experience genuine mountain trail running in its purest form.

With Day 1 the day before the longer UTD events the runners will have the course to themselves. On Day 2 the runners will start just behind the GCU 62 runners and will be back at the finish in time to cheer the UTD 100 runners as they reach the 40km mark at the Sani Pass Hotel.


COURSE

The DRJ is a two day run of almost equal distances both of which are characterized by fairly challenging climbs in the first 3rd of the day followed by plateau sections and long descents back down towards the finish.

Day 1 – Starts on the Sani Pass Hotel golf course and heads up towards the Khanti ridgeline via the well-known trail up to Salt & Pepper Rocks. It then follows a short section along the Khanti Ridge before joining a section of the UTD 100 course and descending back down to the Hotel while passing Balancing Rocks and Nelson’s Column.

Day 2 – Starts on the Sani Pass Hotel golf course and follows the magnificent Gxalingenwa Trail up the gorge and passes the waterfall before joining the Giant’s Cup Trail at Ngenwa Pool. From the pool it follows the Giant’s Cup Trail for a few km before turning off onto the Stromness Trail and descending down the Stromness ridge back to the Hotel.

REGISTRATION

Registration will be held at the Sani Pass Hotel on Thursday 27th April 2017 from 12h00 to 18h00. Alternatively if you are arriving first thing on Friday there will be a Late Registration from 06h00 to 07h00.

RACE BRIEFING

Race briefings will be held on the start line prior to each day’s run approximately 15 minutes before the cow bell rings to set you on your way.

COMPULSORY / RECOMMENDED KIT

All entrants must bring a weather proof running jacket to the race as in the event that conditions are cold and wet these jackets will be made a compulsory item. Should the weather be normal for late April then runners should expect chilly starts around 0 Deg followed by warm and clear days.

Entries are limited to 300 runners. The tented accommodation is in a village near the Start / Finish area on the golf course of the Sani Pass Hotel. All meals are provided by the Hotel.

SDR / ROCKJUMPER COMBO

Anybody entering both the SDR and Drakensberg Rockjumper events will receive a 20% discount on their SDR entry. This allows runners to have the choice of running Day 1 of the Rockjumper on the Friday and then the SDR on Saturday afternoon or, for those with a little more energy, Day 1 & 2 of the Rockjumper and then the SDR on the Saturday afternoon.

PAYMENT DETAILS

Full payment is required on entry. Email confirmations will be sent on completion of the on-line entry form with details of how to make payment. Payments can only be made via EFT or bank deposit. Only once full payment is made will the entry be confirmed.

REFUNDS POLICY (excluding Scholar entries)

The event organisers will refund 90% of the entry fee if an entry is cancelled before 14th April 2017.

Under no circumstances may someone take part under another athlete’s name, proof of identification will be required at registration.
